The first part of this Day Tours offer takes us to Baia Mare. The Roman name of the city was Rivulus Dominarum. After the departure of the Romans there weren’t very many records left. One so called first documentary attestation dates back to 1329, when the city was renowned as a strong center for the extraction of gold ore, extensively exploited by the Hungarians. During Iancu de Hunedoara’s reign, Baia Mare becomes his private property. Today’s ruins of the fortress date back to the reign of the king Matei Corvin. It’s a European medieval city with its characteristic attractions. Like all the big cities from Transilvania, Baia Mare has a long and tumultuous history.

It is visited by large numbers of pilgrims and foreign tourists, mainly for the uniqueness of the wooden churches, but also for the special traditional costumes and the local traditions. The main attraction from Săpânța village is, of course, the famous Merry Cemetery. The Merry Cemetery is a popular cemetery all around the world, being visited by millions of people annually. It’s unique and it’s part of the UNESCO heritage. As you’ve guessed, it’s famous for the brightly colored crosses of the graves, painted in multiple colors, with scenes that depicts moments from the life and profession of those buried. On some of the crosses there are imprinted even poetry lyrics that, in an exclusively humoristic connotation, are depicted certain times from the life of the people concerned. The majority of the crosses exhibit inscriptions with spelling mistakes, archaic writings, which denote the simplicity and originality of the details. This cemetery is unique in the whole world!

The first stop is in the city of Suceava, which is the biggest city from the county with the same name, and it is defined by a rich history. The city was part of the Principality of Moldavia and it has been the Capital for yet another 200 years! Located at the intersection of some extremely important roads, following the Austrian territorial report, between 1775-1918 the city became part of the Crown of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, and also of the Duchy of Bucovina.
During the communism there were discovered silex tools very close to the city, that prove the fact that between 100.000 and 10.000 C.E., in the area around Suceava’s river there used to be populations dating back to the Middle Paleolithic period. Furthermore, in the same area, there were discovered settlements from the Neolithic period. The archaeological excavations determined the existence of multiple stages in the evolution of the city.There are distinct periods from the I-III Centuries, during the free Dancians’ period, unconquered by the Romans. Discoveries from the Iron Age prove the existence of a period of continuous inhabitancy of that area. Accounting for the prefeudal period are the artifacts discovered between the VIII-IX, X-XI Centuries.
Nicolae Costin, as he mentioned the enthronement of Dragoș (1288),spoke about the first people from Maramureș, Saxons or Hungarians that came from the Moldovan lands because they were attracted to the lands and the mountains.Moldova encountered many fearful enemies. Documentary attested since 1415, when the Governor Oana established the old monastery, the tourist resort Gura Humorului is located on an inter-mountain depression, and has an extremely captivating scenery. The city Gura Humorului includes the village Voroneț as part of its structure. The population encompasses Romanians, Germans, Polish, but also a small community of Rroma people (also known as gypsies) . The main attractions from the area include the Gura Humorului Church (dating from the XVth century), the Voroneț monastery (part of the UNESCO patrimony), and also the nearby village Slatina, for its local traditions from Bucovina, of an astonishing beauty, as can rarely be found in Europe nowadays. Voroneț monastery takes a special place in the heart of all visitors. The holy monastery, also called the Sistine Chapel of the Eastern Europe, is a historical place, of a great importance not only in Romania, but also on a worldwide scale! The exterior paintings date back to the XV Century and they are austere, with a byzantine iconography. It is well-known that one of the greatest rulers of Moldova, Ștefan the Great, built and restored many churches. Part of the UNESCO patrimony, this famous monastery has its origins on an impressive legend. It is said that the monastery, as part of the orthodox patrimony of Romania, was built from the stones that were carried for 30 years by a simple woman that was called Muta (the mute)! This woman is said to have had a great sin, and the major effort that she made was for the sin’s forgiveness. Her last wish was to be buried in the monastery’s cemetery, but, unfortunately, her wish couldn’t be fulfilled. The monastery was built by the ruler Ieremia Mivila in the XV century. It is painted in the same iconographical style as the other 8 monasteries from Moldova that are famous across the world. It is worth remembering the monasteries Moldovița, Sucevița, Voroneț, Arbore, Suceava, Părăuți, Probota, all being included in the UNESCO patrimony. The exterior paintings date back to the time of Ștefan the Great and Petru Rareș’s ruling, and it’s perfectly preserved! The bright colors and the imagery, depict biblical passages, for instance the scene of the Last Judgment. This architectural and iconographical treasure is of a beauty hard to replicate. The walls that surround the church are 7 meters high and 3 meters width. It’s equipped with buttresses, ramparts, watch roads, corner towers for defense, recalling the strenuous times that were passed through by this wonderful monastery. This monastery is one of the most beloved place to visit during our Day Tours adventure!
The last place on our Day Tours offer is the Putna Monastery! The monastery was built in the XV century, between 1466-1469, being the work of the greatest king of Moldova, the ruler Ștefan the Great and Holy. It is said that during his ruling Moldova became a large construction site, Putna monstary representing his first founding work. The legend says that in order to select the location of the future monastery, a bow with arrows was used. The place where the arrow fell marked the area on which the monastery was established. The shooting of the bow was executed from a nearby hill, place that can still be spotted even today. Initially, the monastery was painted remarkably, abundantly, on a gold background, both on the inside and outside. However, in 1654 it was partially demolished as a result of the ruler’s belief that the monastery’s walls (or the underground) concealed high amounts of gold. Nevertheless, the monastery was reconstructed afterwards, receiving another two renovations. Putna was extremely well protected by the strong defense walls and imposing towers, a part of them being visible even today.
